Abstract

On a late evening in January 2025, Ainun Maisarah binti Abdul Wahab sat in her workspace in Kodiang, Kedah, watching two streams of messages arrive on her phone. Loyal customers in Kedah wanted to know when Mekaura's next hijab collection would be released. At the same time, prospective buyers in Penang, Selangor, and Johor, who had discovered the brand through social media, were asking whether Mekaura could deliver nationwide.

For Ainun, the first question had long been settled. She entered the business because she believed that demand for hijabs was enduring: Muslim women needed products that balanced modesty, comfort, practicality, and personal style. The more difficult question was whether Mekaura could grow beyond its home market without sacrificing the personal service, product consistency, and cash discipline that had built customer trust.

"Do I grow beyond Kedah with the hijabs people already know, add more products for the local market, or open more branches here first?"
Ainun's decision dilemma, January 2025

Mekaura had been launched on 4 October 2018, inspired by Ainun's eldest daughter and by her aspiration to build a meaningful women-led business from her hometown. By early 2025, the business had established a local following. Yet it was about to face three competing strategic paths: market development beyond Kedah while retaining existing hijab products; product development within Kedah through complementary categories; or deeper local market penetration by opening additional branches. The choice would shape Mekaura's next operating model and its exposure to risk.
