Prehistoric archaeological research in the state of Kelantan has undergone significant and long-term development since the 1930s. It began with accidental artifact discoveries and early explorations by colonial officers, before evolving into more systematic excavations and modern multidisciplinary approaches led by local scholars. This study aims to trace the evolution of this research across four key phases: the colonial pioneer phase, the post-World War II phase, the modern research phase led by local scholars, and the recent research phase. To achieve this objective, the study employs a qualitative approach based on document analysis and literature review, closely examining excavation reports, monographs, and journal articles related to Kelantan archaeology. The findings indicate that Kelantan is far from a peripheral region in the prehistoric narrative of Peninsular Malaysia. Instead, it serves as a vital archaeological landscape offering crucial data on long-term chronologies, diverse site functions, burial practices, lithic technology, and the interactions between early inland communities and the eastern coast of the Peninsula. Furthermore, the analysis identifies key challenges, such as site disturbance and threats from ongoing development, thereby contributing to the formulation of a more sustainable heritage management framework. Overall, the future of prehistoric archaeological research in Kelantan demands a more systematic, collaborative approach anchored in long-term heritage preservation.
